Pet names for lovers add a delightful and intimate touch to relationships, creating a unique language of affection that transcends ordinary terms of endearment. These endearing monikers serve as more than just labels; they encapsulate the shared history, inside jokes, and deep connection between partners. Whether it’s a sweet gesture or a playful expression of love, these special names create a sense of warmth and closeness, forging a bond that goes beyond the conventional expressions of love. In the realm of romantic relationships, pet names become a personal language, a secret code that speaks volumes about the unique dynamics and shared experiences between two people deeply in love. But, what do pet names do British lovers call each other? What are the British nicknames for a boyfriend or girlfriend?
Researchers from Bloom & Wild surveyed 2,000 Brits in relationships, and revealed as many as 70 percent confess, they have a romantic “pet name” for their partner. Perhaps unsurprisingly, “My Love” emerged as British love bird’s favourite term of endearment, with a third (36 percent) claiming to use it when referring to their better half. Baby (32 percent), handsome (23 percent), lover (15 percent) and Princess (12 percent) also emerged as popular love monikers, as did Honey Bunny (11 percent) and Hot Stuff (9 percent).
However, the study also unveiled some of the more weird and wonderful pet names, wheeled out by British lovers, with Nugget, Treacle, Tiger and Pookie making the final top 40 list.
More than a third (34 percent) think the pet name their partner has for them is “cute”, while 40 percent claim they “don’t mind it” and a romantic 29 percent said they genuinely “love it”. A more cynical 18 percent feel the name their partner calls them is a joke which got out of hand, while one in twenty (5 percent) aren’t fond of it or find it annoying. Despite this, 51 percent of Brits feel truly loved when their partner calls them by their special name, with four in ten (40 percent) admitting it helps them feel secure in their relationship.
According to the poll, it takes an average of 25 weeks into a relationship before couples start to create pet names for each other.
While 62 percent never feel self-conscious about their pet name, 18 percent admit that they have been left red-faced when their partner has called them by it in front of friends.
Seven percent admit they have wanted to hide when their partner used an intimate name in front of the supermarket checkout person.
Eight in ten (83 percent) say they are not worried at all if people will judge them for their romantic pet name.
Charlotte Langley, Chief Customer Officer at Bloom & Wild, who is launching a special ‘My Love’ bouquet dedicated to the nation’s top romantic pet name, commented: “It’s clear to see from our research that Brits don’t shy away from showing their affection with seven in ten having a special name for the special person in their life.
And it’s always our privilege to help you surprise your Honey Bunny, Pickle or Boo at Valentine’s Day with flowers, cocktails or sweet treats – we promise there’s no judgement for the name you put in the card!”
Overall, 12 percent worry people will judge them for their pet name, while 46 percent admit to judging other couples by what they call each-other.
However, a resounding 70 percent agree that having romantic nicknames is the key to a strong relationship, while 85% think that romantic pet names are one of the best ways to show affection.
